The Concerto for Group and Orchestra was a live album by Deep Purple. Written by keyboardist Jon Lord with lyrics by Deep Purple’s front man Ian Gillan, it was first performed with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall in 1969. It was groundbreaking in its day because it was the first time that a major rock band had recorded with the full symphony orchestra, the fusion of classical music and rock music being very rare at the time.
Emminent wind and brass band composer Martin Ellerby has masterfully transcribed this Concerto for wind band and we are pleased to perform it at our Headbanger concert on Saturday 12 April.
Matthew Hindson’s 6min Headbanger overture, originally written for orchestra, refers to the vigorous headshaking of fans at heavy metal concerts. Whilst there is unlikely to be any actual headbanging in this concert piece, Hindson hoped to invoke musical gestures that are prominent in heavy metal music.
Also on the program, is Western Sydney composer Holly Harrison’s Pounce and prolific American wind band composer Samuel Hazo’s thrilling ‘Ride’.
